Makhani Shahi Dal – Pakistani Daal Recipe


Makhani Shahi Dal is a famous Pakistani recipe. The creamy texture of daal enhances the flavor and spices and nuts give it a unique taste. Shahi daal is used with chapatti, naan/flatbread. Daal Chawel ( Pulse & Rice ) is the most favorite dish in Pakistan and India.

What are the ingredients of dal makhani.?


  • Channa Daal 250 gram ( 1 cup )
  • Onion 1 medium chopped
  • Tomatoes 2 large chopped
  • Oil ¼ cup
  • Butter 1 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste 2 tbsp
  • Salt ½ tsp or according to taste
  • Red pepper ½ tsp
  • Turmeric ¼ tsp 
  • Dry coriander 1 tsp
  • Black pepper ½ tsp
  • Garm masala ½ tsp
  • Green coriander 2 tbsp
  • Almond powder 1 tbsp
  • Water 1 ½ cup + ½ cup

Ingredient for Tarka preparation


  • Oil ¼ cup
  • Butter 1 tbsp
  • Green chilies 3
  • Whole red pepper 5 -6
  • Cumin seeds ( jeera ) 1 tsp

How to Make Shahi Dal Makhani.?


  • Clean the dal and soak it in water for 1 hour.
  • Take a pressure cooker and add oil and fry the onion in it.
  • When it changes colors add ginger garlic paste and 
  • Add salt, red pepper, and turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Add ½ cup water if needed. Fry all ingredients and make a smooth paste.
  • Now add soaked daal to it. Add water 1 ½ cups of and close the pressure cooker.
  • Cook on a medium flame for 10 minutes after 
  • Open the cooker and check if Daal is If not cook for some more time.
  • Dry the water if any in daal. Now add Dry coriander, black pepper, green coriander, garam masala, and almond Mix well all ingredients.
  • For Tarka: Take a pan and add oil and butter to it.
  • When it is hot. Add green chilies, whole red pepper, and jeera to it. 
  • Hot Tarka add in cooked 
  • Serve hot daal garnished with almond powder and Serve with hot chapatis or roti.
